Examine the psychology of fear! Let’s discuss what scares us, cinematically and culturally. We all love the horror, but what makes the genre unique? Find out with us at Circle Cinema for our Blacktober film series hosted by Autumn Brown, PhD (Research professional, educator, Black film history expert) and Hank Byrd (Filmmaker, horror expert). Tickets regular price and include post-film Q&A and discussion with the hosts.
Blacktober continues with the 1968 classic of the zombie genre, George A. Romero's 1968 "Night of the Living Dead." A disparate group of individuals takes refuge in an abandoned house when corpses begin to leave the graveyard in search of fresh human bodies to devour. Duane Jones plays the lead role of Ben, in a strong performance that defied stereotypical portrayals of black men on screen at the time. This casting, and the themes of the film, have shaped its legacy as an allegory for the American Civil Rights movement.
