ABOUT THE EVENT

Picking and grinning since 2004, Klondike5 String Band brings the close-knit festival picking circles to the public eye. In every performance, the songs are recreated organically, with the musicians taking cues from each other depending on the environment. Matthew Skelton leads the band with a voice that matches his booming guitar rhythms—his banter, quick wit, and rapport with the audience are a treat to witness and keep everyone chuckling throughout the set. Carmen Skelton gracefully draws out the fiddle strings to find the perfect tone, calling the ear to hear sorrow or joy; she never hesitates to let her voice float above the melody. Banjo player Alex Adams channels the energy and innovation of electric guitar into the simplicity of folk songs, creating a deep, rich sound—always ready to shred at any moment. The other belle to behold in the group, upright bassist Rosie Gorrell, may come in an unassuming package, but she packs a punch, delivering harmonies inspired by Baptist church hymnals of yesteryear. Rounding out the group's frequencies is Ted Ward, always on time and on beat. A percussive innovator, he jumps between washboard, drums, harmonica, and cowbell with an eclectic array of homemade rhythmic creations.
