In 1994, first-year teacher Erin Gruwell walks into a Long Beach classroom split along gang and racial lines, in the tense years after the L.A. riots. Nothing she tries reaches her students — until she turns the class toward a story fifty years older than any of them: a teenager hiding from the Nazis in an Amsterdam attic, writing down her days in a diary. Gruwell hands her students blank composition books of their own and asks them to do the same. The following year, the class raises the money themselves to fly in Miep Gies — the woman who hid the Frank family — to visit them in person.

Freedom Writers is a true account of what one diary accomplished: Anne Frank's words reach across fifty years and an ocean, and turn a divided classroom into a room that finally listens to itself.

Anne Frank and her family spent 761 days hiding in a concealed apartment above her father's office in Amsterdam. She was thirteen when they went in. In August 1944, someone informed on them. Anne died at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp eight months later — just weeks before liberation.

She kept a diary. It has been read by more people than almost any other book in history — because her voice is not a statistic. She was a specific person, in a specific place, living a specific life that a government decided didn't count.

This production, adapted by Wendy Kesselman, doesn't soften the story. It gives you Anne — funny, brilliant, furious, and full of life.
