Can a man murder . . . and not remember? A famous art critic and forgery expert desperately tries to break into a Manhattan art museum at midnight. When the police apprehend him, he claims he was in a train wreck--but none has occurred--and that he must get into the museum--but he doesn't know why. Is this noted man the key to a deadly plot or suffering a mental Crack-Up? Is art critic George Steele (Pat O'Brien) insane? The police cannot hold him, but they decide to follow him. Steele retraces his steps from the day before, hoping to find answers . . . hoping to prove his sanity. His investigation reveals the murder of a good friend, which is linked to forgeries of some very expensive paintings in this film noir thriller. But who is the murderer? Based on the story "Madman's Holiday" by Fredric Brown.
