About the film: 56min – Documentary – Not Rated

BEFORE THE PAUSE reveals the hidden reality of perimenopause through the voices of women whose lives are disrupted and dismissed. A teacher is told her symptoms are “all in her head” even as she struggles at home and in the classroom. A firefighter navigates heavy periods with no women’s bathroom in sight. Doctors themselves admit they lack the knowledge to adequately help the patients sitting in front of them. By centering these stories alongside leading experts, the film exposes a systemic blind spot and makes a powerful case for why early awareness can transform women’s health, careers, and sense of self. Produced by Women in the Room Productions and Take Flight Productions.

About the panelists:

Anne Pollard James is a contemporary oil painter working in Oklahoma. Largely self-taught, her work is joyful reclamation. Anne came to art in her late 40’s and found painting the week before the world shut down in 2020.Through provocation, humor, and strength, she examines equality and personal truths through a contemporary figurative lens. She shows the complex ways we navigate in the spaces that surround us, and emboldens women to take up space. Anne’s paintings are loud, hard, soft, sweet and sharp and always through the lens of the spectacular strength of women.

As an extension of her artistic practice, Anne founded Carson House Tulsa, a contemporary gallery, studio, and artist residency located on the same property as her studio. Serving as a dynamic salon for art, poetry, education, and community engagement, Carson House hosts life drawing sessions, exhibitions, workshops, and gatherings. While open to all, it unapologetically centers women, offering a space where creative and community work are supported with intention, accessibility, and without pretense.

Traci Owen, BSN, RN, CSC-S, SE, is a sexual wellness expert, registered nurse, certified sexuality counselor supervisor, and the Co-Founder of Intimate Pathways Center for Sexual Health.

With 36+ years in healthcare and a whole lot of real-talk experience, Traci helps people navigate the wonderfully weird, wildly human, and often under-discussed parts of perimenopause, menopause, desire, intimacy, body changes, pleasure, and connection.

She brings humor, heart, and clinical wisdom to conversations that deserve less whispering and more honest, shame-free support.

Jessica Brewer, APRN, CNP, FNP-C, is a leading menopause and hormone specialist in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the founder of Balanced Wellness. A member of The Menopause Society, she has completed advanced continuing medical education through Stanford School of Medicine in menopause and healthy aging.

With over a decade of experience in women’s health, Jessica is known for her expertise in perimenopause, menopause, and hormone optimization. She takes an evidence-based, personalized approach—helping women address symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, sleep disruption, and mood changes while also protecting long-term health, including cardiovascular, metabolic, and bone health.

Through Balanced Wellness, she has become a trusted local resource for women seeking comprehensive, modern menopause care, bridging the gap between traditional medicine and a more proactive, root-cause approach.

Laura Webb is an educational therapist, founder of Learning Beyond Letters, and advocate for neurodivergent women and families. Diagnosed with dyslexia as an adult, Laura’s experience understanding her own brain became an important part of both her personal life and her work.

During the pandemic, the loss of familiar systems and routines brought new executive functioning challenges to the surface. As research and information about ADHD in women became more accessible, Laura recognized her own experience and was eventually diagnosed with ADHD.

Today, Laura supports neurodivergent students, parents, and women through her Tulsa practice, virtual education, and groups like Squirrel Club. Her work centers on radical brain acceptance—helping people better understand their brains and build lives that work with them, rather than against them.
